Over time, sunlight exposure, heavy foot traffic, and accumulated dust cause wool rug fibers to become fuzzy, faded, and stiff. Our custom hand-shearing process gently shaves the microscopic top layer of worn wool pile, slicing away sun-bleached tips to expose the vibrant, raw organic pigments locked in the core of the yarn below.

Exposing locked color layers deep in the wool pile

Rug shearing is one of the most transformative techniques in oriental carpet conservation. Wool fibers are highly resilient three-dimensional tubes. While the outer tips of these tubes degrade and fade under UV light and friction, the lower shaft remains saturated with the original natural lanolin and vegetable dyes.
By shaving fractions of a millimeter off the surface, we eliminate the fuzzy, light-scattering "fuzz" layer. This allows light to strike the clean, aligned yarn fibers directly, resulting in a dramatic increase in color contrast, pattern definition, and natural wool luster.
Rows of shaved wool fibers combed off the surface as the artisan makes precision passes across the medallion canvas.
Below is a side-by-side view showing the dramatic difference before and after precision hand-shearing. The left side demonstrates a sun-faded, fuzzy pile where details are completely blurred. The right side shows the sheared pile with fully restored vegetable dyes and crisp pattern borders.
Follow the step-by-step restoration of a heavily faded red medallion rug as it is sheared back to its original deep crimson and gold contrast.
01 / Faded
The rug's surface appears dull, dusty, and severely faded from years of wear. The pattern details are hazy and the colors look washed out.
02 / Shearing
Our master artisan uses curved shearing knives to shave the top layer. The bright red core contrast is instantly visible against the faded brown background.
03 / Progress
Shaving passes are made systematically. Loose, degraded wool fibers form long rows of fluff as they are combed and vacuumed off the surface.
Examine the restoration of a faded blue silk-and-wool rug, shaving away light-scattering fuzz to recover rich indigo details.
01 / Faded
The blue background has lost its depth due to light sun-bleaching. A hazy grey tint covers the medallion design, making the borders look muddy.
02 / Hand Shaving
Using traditional flat scraper blades, we shave off the fuzzy top layer of fibers, exposing the rich, saturated indigo and navy hues beneath.
03 / Completed
The finished masterpiece. The pattern borders are crisp and distinct, and the wool pile reflects a high-gloss natural luster under light.
Why shearing is essential for high-value antique rugs that have suffered surface degradation.
Sunlight breaks down the chemical bonds of wool proteins at the very tips of the pile. This creates a brittle, dry layer that scatters light instead of reflecting it. Shaving this damaged micro-layer does not thin the rug significantly; instead, it removes only the dry, color-ruined tips, exposing the healthy, dye-saturated wool core underneath.
Eliminates high and low spots caused by uneven wear, making the rug surface perfectly flat and smooth.
When pile fibers become fuzzy, borders blend together. Shearing restores sharp detail lines to intricate designs.
Unlike automated mechanical shavers that can catch and tear hand-knotted foundations, we use specialized curved shearing knives. These heavy steel blades are guided completely by the artisan's touch, ensuring that areas with structural variance are shaved with perfect safety and custom depth control.
Hand-guided blades slide smoothly over knots without pulling, securing delicate older foundations.
Exposes the lanolin-rich core of the wool fiber, giving the rug a natural glossy sheen without chemical additives.
